What is Gynecomastia?

Self-consciousness about appearance is not limited to the female population. Men also struggle with their self-image, particularly if there is an area of the body that makes them embarrassed or uncomfortable. One of the top concerns for men is a medical condition known as gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia is characterized by over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. Common in men of any age, various factors might contribute to excess breast growth. Gynecomastia can lead to emotional discomfort and profoundly impact a man’s self-esteem. Some men may even avoid some activities or intimacy to keep their condition hidden from others. Dr. Odinet understands the distress caused by gynecomastia, and offers surgical solutions to restore the masculine body contour and self-confidence in your appearance.

Causes of Gynecomastia

There are many reasons why gynecomastia occurs. It is essential to pinpoint the cause behind the condition so that it is possible to ensure the most effective treatment. Gynecomastia may be a result of:

  • Heredity, which means gynecomastia can run in some families
  • Hormonal fluctuations (particularly affecting testosterone and estrogen levels)
  • Some medications, especially androgens, anti-androgens and anabolic steroids
  • Medical conditions such as liver and kidney failure, hyperthyroidism and hypogonadism
  • Abuse of street drugs, marijuana or alcohol

By identifying the cause of gynecomastia we can not only provide a long-lasting result, but also ensure that underlying medical issues are appropriately addressed. Nonetheless, in some instances an underlying cause may be undiscoverable. In these situations, Dr. Odinet can create a treatment plan based on a physical examination and your explanation of symptoms.

The Gynecomastia Solution

Gynecomastia surgery is a customized procedure designed to reduce the size of the male breast and create a more masculine upper body profile. Dr. Odinet uses several different techniques to tailor each patients a custom and individualized surgical plan that produces a result that is natural, proportionate, and distinctly masculine. Areas of focus might include:

  • Excess breast tissue
  • Stubborn areas of fat
  • Loose, hanging skin

Dr. Odinet will target each of these concerns when creating your surgical plan to ensure you enjoy complete results from your procedure.

Should You Consider Gynecomastia Surgery?

It can be difficult for men to be transparent about a concern as personal as gynecomastia. However, with the treatment options today, this condition is getting more attention in the offices of plastic surgeons across the globe. Dr. Odinet understands the delicate nature of this problem and will make sure you are treated with professionalism and compassion throughout your experience.

During your private consultation, Dr. Odinet will perform a complete medical and physical exam. This process gives him the information necessary to recommend the best treatment plan for you to meet your expectations keeping in mind your skin quality, breast volume, and the potential causes of your condition.

Gynecomastia Options

Dr. Odinet may perform your gynecomastia treatment using liposuction of the fatty tissue, excision of excess skin and glandular tissue, or a combination of the two. The procedure is customized to your needs to provide you with the best overall results.

If fatty tissue is contributing to gynecomastia, liposuction is a less invasive method of eliminating the fat deposits and sculpting a flatter chest contour. The procedure can often be done using local anesthesia and recovery time is minimal in most cases. This procedure produces the best results on men with good skin elasticity, which allows the skin to conform smoothly to the new chest profile.

Surgical Excision

More extensive surgery may be needed if there is a significant amount of glandular tissue or skin to remove from the chest to ensure an optimal outcome. While this procedure often requires general anesthesia and a few days of downtime, the results can be quite dramatic. This procedure is also recommended when the nipple and areola need to be resized or repositioned to create a natural look.

If Dr. Odinet determines a combination of liposuction and surgical excision are necessary, he will perform both techniques during the same appointment, so you only have one time under anesthesia and one recovery period. The combination approach also ensures you enjoy full results from your gynecomastia treatment after a single treatment session.

Your Gynecomastia Surgery Experience

Dr. Odinet typically performs gynecomastia surgery at his AAAASF-accredited facility, using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. If liposuction is performed, he will create two small incisions on either side of the chest to allow the insertion of a narrow tube called a cannula. Dr. Odinet will gently rotate the cannula inside the fatty deposit to loosen the tissue and then suction it out of the chest area.

Surgical excision requires incisions around the areola (pigmented area surrounding the nipple), ensuring post-operative scarring is safely hidden within the pigment. Through this incision, Dr. Odinet will remove the glandular tissue and excess skin to sculpt a smooth chest contour. If correction required is substantial, additional incisions may be necessary. However, Dr. Odinet will place all incisions carefully within the natural folds of skin or other areas where visible scarring will be minimal.

After Gynecomastia Surgery

Recovery after gynecomastia surgery is relatively quick and comfortable. Most men are back to driving within a day and resume work and other activities within a couple of days. Dr. Odinet will advise that you to refrain from heavy lifting and other vigorous exercises for approximately four to six weeks. However, light workouts are encouraged soon after surgery to promote healthy blood flow and accelerate the healing process.

When gynecomastia is treated correctly, the results can be both dramatic and long-lasting. Many men find the outcome to be life-changing as it restores their confidence in their appearance and allows them to participate in a wider variety of activities once again.
