Dr. Odinet Explain’s the Different Types of Facelifts

When it comes to facial rejuvenation, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Aging affects each  patient differently—some experience volume loss in the cheeks, while others develop  significant skin laxity along the jawline and neck. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, my goal  is to match the right procedure to the right patient for natural, balanced, and long-lasting  results.

Let’s break down the three primary types of facelift procedures, what they address, and who  makes an ideal candidate.

Midface Lift (Ideal for Early Volume Loss)

The midface lift is designed for patients who are beginning to notice aging changes but are not  yet experiencing significant sagging in the jawline or neck. The midface lift specifically targets  the cheek and midface region, making it a more focused approach than a full facelift.

What it targets:

  • Loss of volume in the cheek (malar) area
  • Mild sagging in the midface
  • Hollow or tired appearance
  • Early descent of soft tissue under the eyes

Ideal candidate:

  • Younger patients or those in early stages of aging
  • Patients with localized midface aging
  • Minimal skin laxity
  • No significant jowling or neck sagging
  • Those wanting subtle enhancement rather than full correction
  • Individuals not yet ready for a full facelift

Results:

This procedure repositions and lifts the deeper tissues of the midface, restoring a more  youthful contour and fullness to the cheeks. It is frequently combined with fat grafting to  restore volume and improve overall facial harmony. It creates a refreshed appearance without  dramatically altering your look. However, it’s important to note that this technique does not  significantly address excess skin or aging in the jawline and neck.

Full Facelift (The Gold Standard for Advanced Aging)

For patients with more advanced signs of aging, the full facelift remains the gold standard.

What it targets:

  • Sagging skin in the lower face
  • Jowls along the jawline
  • Excess skin and laxity in the neck
  • Deep folds and wrinkles

Ideal candidate:

  • Patients with moderate to severe skin laxity
  • Visible aging in the lower face and neck
  • Those seeking comprehensive rejuvenation

Results:

A full facelift addresses both the skin and underlying structures, repositioning tissues and  removing excess skin for a smoother, firmer, and more youthful appearance. When performed  correctly, results look natural—not tight or “overdone”—and can take years off your  appearance.

Choosing the Right Approach

Each of these procedures serves a distinct purpose:

  • Midface lift: Best for early aging and volume loss
  • Full facelift: Best for advanced aging and skin laxity
  • Cheek (malar) lift: Best for targeted midface enhancement

The key to excellent results is proper patient selection and a customized surgical plan. In many  cases, combining techniques—or pairing surgery with non-surgical treatments—can further  enhance outcomes.
