Is It Safe to Combine Plastic Surgery Procedures? How Many Can Be Done at Once?
By Dr. Kenneth Odinet, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon
After more than 30 years in practice, one of the questions I continue to hear most often is, “Is it safe to combine plastic surgery procedures, and how many can be done in one surgery?”
There is no simple number that applies to every patient. For the right candidate, combining procedures — such as a breast lift or augmentation with an abdominoplasty in a mommy makeover — is a well-established and safe approach when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited facility. The decision, however, is always individualized.
Factors I Consider
In my practice, the choice to combine procedures or stage them is based on a careful review of several factors to ensure optimal patient safety:
- Patient goals: Understanding what you hope to achieve allows me to design a plan in which the procedures work together for a balanced, natural result.
- Overall health: I review your medical history, chronic conditions, medications, and prior surgeries in detail to determine that you are a good surgical candidate.
- Age: While there is no cutoff, age helps me assess healing capacity and how your body is likely to respond to anesthesia and recovery.
- Body mass index and tissue quality: These influence surgical planning and how you will heal with minimal chance of postoperative complications.
- Total operative time: I carefully calculate the expected length of surgery to keep anesthesia time within a safe range.
- Extent and complexity of each procedure: The procedures are evaluated together, not independently.
- Recovery capacity: Your support system at home and ability to follow postoperative instructions matter.
- Individual anatomy: Every plan is customized so the procedures complement one another.
Pros of Combining Procedures
When appropriate, combining procedures offers clear advantages. Patients undergo one anesthesia event and one recovery period rather than multiple. It is often more cost-effective and allows for a more harmonious result. Many of my mommy makeover patients appreciate being able to address several concerns at once and return to their normal routines with a single recovery.
Cons and Specific Risks of Longer Operative Times
Combining procedures also has drawbacks that must be weighed carefully. Longer operative times increase the body’s overall stress and elevate certain anesthesia-related risks, including a greater chance of blood clots, fluid shifts, and prolonged recovery. Extended surgery can lead to more significant swelling, discomfort, and activity restrictions in the early postoperative period. Should a complication arise, it may affect more than one surgical site. For some patients, staging the procedures separately reduces these risks and allows for a more manageable recovery focused on one area at a time.
In my experience, the safest and most satisfying outcomes come from matching the surgical plan to the individual patient. During your consultation, we review all of these factors together, perform a thorough examination, and determine whether combining procedures is the right choice for you.
If you are considering a mommy makeover or other combined procedures, I invite you to schedule a consultation so we can create a plan that prioritizes your safety and helps you achieve the results you desire.
